paper plane cafe, parramatta

For those who don't already know, I'm definitely not a morning person. I wouldn't swap anything for a good sleep in, especially during the Winter. This is why I always find myself at cafes during the lunch hour with a hankering for a good hearty breakfast.

And that is how I found myself at the Paper Plane Cafe! They do an all day breakfast menu featuring the classics like breakfast boards, eggs on toast, bennies, French toast as well as sliders, the bad boys (really good fries), and burgers for lunch.

The BIG Brekkie ($19.50):
Sunny side up eggs, bacon, chorizo, hash brown, sauteed portobello mushrooms, tomatoes, side salad and sourdough toast.
We totally should have heeded the word 'big' emphasised in capitals, on the menu, as a warning for the huge breakfast board serving. But it was too late. I gasped at the size of the serving once it appeared on the table. The board covers your traditional breakfast staples with fatty bacon rashers, sunny side up eggs on sourdough toast, grilled tomatoes, crispy hash brown, spicy chorizos, sauteed portobello mushrooms and a generous handful of rocket dressed with balsamic vinegar. This could easily feed two.

Oh by the way, there's a breakfast board named 'The Tiny Dancer'. Don't be fooled! It's not tiny at all.

Mushrooms and Scrambled Eggs ($15.00):
Sauteed portobello mushrooms, wilted spinach and scrambled eggs topped with truffle oil on sourdough toast.

I wanted something eggy with mushrooms so... surprise surprise - I ordered the mushrooms and scrambled eggs! The cloud of egg was super fluffy and creamy with just a hint of truffle oil. I loved the mushrooms - they were juicy and wonderfully charred. The portion looked tiny in contrast to the BIG brekkie but rest assured for it was both tasty and filling.

A week later, we dined at Paper Plane's again, or well more like feasted because no, we did not learn our lesson from our first experience and ordered even more.

Smoked Salmon Eggs Benny ($15.00) - Extra Avocado ($4.00), Hashbrown ($2.00):
Poached eggs, smoked salmon and sauteed spinach topped with hollandaise sauce on sourdough

The salmon eggs benedict includes wilted spinach, smoked salmon and two perfectly poached eggs, which exploded with golden yolk as soon as you prodded it with the tip of your fork. This was covered in hollandaise sauce and presented on an organic sourdough toast. The heavily seeded hollandaise is mustardy and tangy, which works really well. We order a side of avocado because you know, salmon and avocado are great together and hash brown .. well, because it's okay to spoil yourself sometimes.

Chorizo Hot Pot ($14.50):
Chorizo and eggs cooked in a spicy tomato sauce.
It was an extremely windy day and for me, the chorizo hot pot sounded perfect! It arrives still steaming.

A generous amount of sliced chorizo and eggs are baked in a chunky, tangy and spicy tomato sauce, topped with feta, chilli flakes and a handful of fresh rocket. While the chorizo was juicy and spicy, I found my eggs a tad bit overcooked.

And no, the pot in the image above isn't tiny at all - it's just that the two pieces of toast were huge! But that's a good thing because you can use it to mop up all the leftover tomato sauce.

Bowl of Fries ($6.00):

Even though we were super full, we still managed to stuff these fries into our bellies because they were just so tasty and as I mentioned earlier, it's okay to spoil yourself sometimes! By the end of the meal, they were still ridiculously crunchy and the seasoning was just too addictive.

And to cap off, we ordered the sweet Lemon Cheesecake French Toast.

Lemon Cheesecake French Toast ($13.00):
Topped with mixed berries, crushed meringue and vanilla ice cream
If you're not on a diet and you're cool with something super sweet for breakfast, please order a version of their French Toast! The pieces of toast are thick with a texture that was just slightly denser than your average sponge cake. It was topped with fresh strawberries, blueberries, a lemony custard like cream, crunchy meringue bits and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was perfect!

Although I was absolutely stuffed, I was already planning my next visit! I still have to try their sliders or the Monte Cristo. Yes, I have to.

Hi there! My name is Anna. I'm nineteen, in my second year of uni (UNSW) and born in Sydney. This blog is about my gastronomic adventures in Australia and abroad. It all started when I got new camera (Samsung Ex1) and since then, I've been mainly taking photos of food. So, I decided to document everything on this blog.

I'm still learning to take nice pictures - my camera isn't exactly the greatest but it works.

Oh, and I think we should get this out of the way (just in case you decide to unfriend me) I'm not a fan of chocolate or coffee. (Yes you saw right).

Anyway, enough about me - thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy!
